9. Concealment or Cover?
What is the difference, and why do I care? Concealment hides you while cover protects you. A drapery may hide you, but it won’t stop a bullet. A steel beam may hide you, and it will stop a bullet. So given a choice, which would you prefer? Cover! But what if you still need to shoot? The idea is to expose as little of your body as possible. You don’t want to pop your head out and then back out looking for the assailant. Ever play Whack-a-Mole? If they saw you the first time, they know where you are likely to pop out next and will probably be waiting for you to do it.
Shuffling slightly toward the open side, you want to lean your body out to see around the barrier but expose as little of yourself as possible. You are also leading with your gun, which is a couple inches back from the barrier so you don’t get caught on it or impede the slide in any way. This is dangerous stuff in the real world, which is why I encourage you to let police clear your house instead of trying to do it yourself if you come home and the door is open. But if you are trapped, you need to be able to defend yourself. It is called pie-ing, taking a little slice at a time and minimizing your exposure. This can be practiced at home with a blue gun and at many ranges. Some will let you hang a piece of cardboard to act as a barrier, and some will let you stand a folding table vertically, although a friend who lets students do this at his range has an embarrassing number of holes in the side of the table. I have a tall narrow box that had been shipped to me. I used duct tape to secure a brick in the bottom and fashioned a handle at the top to make it easier to carry. This allows me to place the box on the shooting table in the booth and use it as my barrier. Get creative and have fun, but know you are learning skills that may save your life.
